Puerta Abierta is a dual-language school, which means both English and Spanish are spoken. For both English speakers and Spanish speakers, Puerta Abierta Preschool offers the gift of an education in another language.
Preschool years are golden years for language acquisition and development because language comes naturally to young learners. Thus, English-dominant children have the chance to more easily acquire Spanish. Furthermore, research shows that Spanish-speaking children with greater native language development more easily and fully acquire the English language. In addition, studies have shown that students who are exposed to multiple languages at an early age are more adept at learning in general and become better learners for life.
Our goal is also to promote an appreciation of each child’s own cultural heritage while inspiring an interest in and acceptance of other cultures. Through interaction with peers, teachers, and other parents, children naturally learn about each other and how to negotiate the diverse world around them—not to mention learning about cooperation, compromise, sharing, and other developmentally appropriate behaviors.
Puerta Abierta also has a passionate commitment to the concept of play-based early childhood education. Our play-based program allows children to create their own educational path. Teachers do not force rote learning upon the students; instead, children are encouraged to become natural scientists and explorers—learning through experimentation and other meaningful, concrete experiences. (See the Curriculum section for more information on our play-based approach.)
